More than a month has passed since the release of iOS 16 and we finally have its version available for iPad. They have been slow to release it but we already have it available for download.
Not the first version but iPadOS 16.1 with fixes that will make the premiere on iPads even more beautiful, balanced and secure. If you want to know everything new that this new version of iPadOS brings, be sure to read and enjoy.

All these features are available in iOS 16. There are also new features only available for iPads.
Shared iCloud Photo Library:
- A separate photo library is available that lets you share photos and videos directly with up to five people.
- When creating a new library or joining an existing one, the settings rules let you easily share photos by filtering photos by start date or who appears in them.
- Filters allow you to quickly switch the currently viewed library between shared, personal, or both.
- Thanks to changing and sharing permissions, anyone can add photos, edit them, bookmark them, include captions and delete them.
- With the button in the Camera app, you can send the photos you take directly to the shared photo library or set them to be shared automatically when other participants are detected by Bluetooth.
Messaging on iPadOS 16:
- You can edit a message up to 15 minutes after it's been sent, and recipients will be able to see a record of your changes.
- You can undo sending messages up to 2 minutes after sending them.
- Mark messages as unread to easily return to a conversation later.
- SharePlay in the Messages app lets you watch movies, listen to music, play games and more while you talk to your friends.
- The collaboration feature is an easy way to invite others to collaborate on a file using the Messages app and receive updates on thread activity when someone makes changes to a shared project.
Mail:
- Improved search that offers more accurate and complete results, as well as suggestions when you start typing.
- We can undo sending so we can cancel the delivery of an email up to 10 seconds after sending it.
- We can schedule shipments and thus send an email on a particular day at a specific time.
- With the reminders you can program what day and at what time you want to receive a reminder about a certain email.
Safari and access keys:
- Shared tab groups let you share a set of tabs with others and check for updates instantly.
- The main page of each tab group can be customized by adding different background images and bookmarks.
- You can pin the most visited websites in each group of tabs.
- Web page translation in Safari now works in Indonesian, Dutch, Polish, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese.
- Access keys make logging in easier and more secure than passwords.
- Your access keys are end-to-end encrypted and synced across all your Apple devices using iCloud Keychain so you always have them.
Visual Organizer:
- A new way to multitask on iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later), and iPad Air (5th Gen).
- You can overlap windows and adjust the size of apps to create your ideal workspace.
- Recent apps are placed on the left side of the screen so you can quickly switch between apps.
- You can create app groups so you can access them quickly.
New display modes in iPadOS 16:
- When reference mode is enabled on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display, reference colors are displayed for the most common color standards and video formats; and with Sidecar, you can use it as a reference display for a Mac with an Apple chip.
- New screen scaling increases pixel density so you can see more content within your apps. Available on the 11-inch iPad Pro (1st generation and later), 12.9-inch iPad Pro (5th generation and later), and iPad Air (5th generation).
App Weather:
- On iPad, the Weather app has been optimized for a larger screen size and includes realistic animations, detailed maps, and forecast modules that you can open with a tap.
- Weather maps display precipitation, air quality, and temperature next to the location view or full screen.
- Tap the modules to see more detailed information, such as the hourly temperature and the rainfall forecast for the next ten days.
- The level and category of air quality are indicated by a color scale. You can check it on a map and access he alth recommendations, detailed pollution reports and much more.
- Animated backgrounds represent the position of the sun, clouds and precipitation with thousands of variations.
- Severe Weather Notifications will notify you when a weather alert is issued in your area.
GameCenter:
- In the control panel of each game you can see the activity of your friends in that game, as well as find out what else they play and what achievements they get. Everything from one place.
- Game Center profiles highlight your achievements and rank in every game you play.
- Integration with the People app shows you your friends' Game Center profiles so you can see what they're playing and what their achievements are.
Live Text:
- Live text is also supported for videos so you can pause and interact with the text on the screen to copy, translate, search, share and more. Available on iPad (8th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later) and all 11-inch iPad Pro models.
- Quick actions allow you to interact with a single touch with the data detected in photos and videos. - Separate the subject from the background in an image to copy and paste into apps like Mail and Messages. - Visual Finder now also recognizes birds, insects, spiders and statues in your photos. Available on iPad (8th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later) and all 11-inch iPad Pro models.
Siri:
- Shortcuts settings have been simplified so that you can use them with Siri as soon as you download an app, without having to configure anything.
- A new setting lets you quickly send messages without Siri prompting you.
- The question “Hey Siri, what can I do here?” lets you discover what Siri is capable of on iPadOS and in apps just by asking. Available on iPad (8th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later) and all 11-inch iPad Pro models.
- You can hang up a phone or FaceTime call with Siri simply by saying "Hey Siri, hang up." Available on iPad (8th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3.generation and later) and all 11-inch iPad Pro models.

Dictation:
- The dictation experience has been completely revamped and now lets you enter and edit text using a combination of your voice and keyboard or Apple Pencil. Available on iPad (8th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later) and all 11-inch iPad Pro models.
- Automatic punctuation inserts commas, periods, and question marks as you dictate.
- Now you can insert emojis with your voice while dictating. Available on iPad (8th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later) and all 11-inch iPad Pro models.
Maps:
- Possibility to create driving routes with up to 15 stops in Maps.
- Public transit fares tell you how much it will cost to travel across the San Francisco Bay, London, New York and more.
Home:
- The renewed design of the Home app further simplifies the experience of exploring, organizing, viewing and controlling your home automation accessories.
- The Home tab now shows all your fixtures, rooms, and environments, giving you an overview of your home and keeping track of everything at a glance.
- Lights, Climate, Security, Speakers & TVs, and Water categories give you quick access to fixtures and view them organized by room with detailed status information.
- The new camera view shows the image of up to four cameras in the Home tab and you just have to scroll to see the others.
- Accessory tiles have been redesigned to include more easily recognizable icons whose color matches their category. In addition, improvements have been made to control accessories more precisely.
- Compatibility with Matter, the new connectivity standard for smart homes, allows you to connect a wide variety of home automation accessories from different ecosystems.
With family:
- The account creation process for minors has been improved to make it easier to set them up with proper parental controls and age-appropriate content restrictions.
- The quick start option makes it easy to set up a new iOS or iPadOS device for a child using parental controls you select.
- Airtime requests you receive from your son or daughter reach you in the Messages app, making it easier to approve or reject them.
- The Family Checklist gives you tips and advice, like updating parental controls on a child's device, turning on location sharing, or just reminding you to share your iCloud+ subscription with others.
Apps comparable to those of a computer:
- Customizable toolbars let you add the features you use most often to your apps.
- Menus provide more context about actions like close, save, and duplicate, making it easier to edit documents and files in Pages, Numbers, and other apps.
- Use find and replace across multiple apps, like Mail, Messages, Reminders, or Swift Playgrounds.
- When you create meetings in the Calendar app, the availability of invited participants is displayed in the corresponding view.
Security check:
- Safety Check is a new section of Settings that helps people at risk of domestic and gender-based violence quickly revoke access they've granted to others.
- Emergency reset lets you act quickly and restore access to all apps and people, like turning off location sharing in the Find My app, resetting app privacy permissions, and more.
- The option to manage access and data sharing allows you to review and customize which apps and people have access to your information.
Accessibility:
- Door detection in the Magnifier app allows you to detect a door, read the signs and symbols nearby, and guide you through the process of opening it.
- The Assistant Controller combines two controllers into one to allow a person with a cognitive disability to get help from a friend or caregiver to navigate between screens in a video game.
- VoiceOver is available in over 20 new languages including Bengali (India), Bulgarian, Catalan, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.
iPadOS 16.1 also includes other features and improvements:
- New watercolor, monoline and fountain pen tools in the Notes app.
- Compatibility with AirPods Pro (2nd generation), with the ability to locate the MagSafe charging case using the Find app's precision search, as well as custom spatial audio for a more accurate listening experience and more immersive, also available on AirPods (3.gen), AirPods Pro (1st gen), and AirPods Max.
- Handoff in FaceTime lets you easily switch FaceTime calls from your iPad to your iPhone or Mac, and vice versa.
- Memoji updates include stickers with new poses, hairstyles, nose shapes, headwear, and lip colors.
- The Translate app's camera lets you translate the text around you.
- The Photos app's duplicate detection lets you do a quick cleanup of your photo library.
- Pinned lists in Reminders help you move quickly through your favorite lists.
- Home Screen Search lets you access Spotlight directly from the bottom of the Home screen, making it easier to open apps, find contacts, and search the web for information.
- Security Rapid Response lets you automatically download important security updates to your devices without having to wait for OS updates.
