The problem of Instagram and localization
A few days ago a rumor about Instagram began to move through different social networks, quite disturbing. It was that, by sharing a location in Stories or Posts, Instagram would be tracking and sharing our exact location.
This means that by adding the location Sticker to Stories, for example, if people accessed that location, could see our specific location on the map. But, how true is this rumor?
To respond to this, and taking into account the seriousness that it would imply at the level of privacy and security for the users of the app, Instagram has spoken. Through Twitter they have issued a small statement.
From Instagram they have denied this and have labeled it totally false
In it they indicate that Instagram does not share the location or the location with other people and that they use the exact location for things like location labels and different functions that are in the maps.
The CEO of Instagram has wanted to go further by reiterating that locations are not shared with others and indicating that this is not a new feature of Instagram, but that it is of a feature of the devices.
And this is totally true. In fact, the exact location function has been in the iPhone for some time now and can be very useful, for example, for the map applications that we have on our devices.
We have personally verified that, when indicating the location where we are, if we access it on the map our exact location is not shown. On the other hand, it shows where the location that we have indicated in the location sticker is located (restaurant, bar, beach, etc.)
In any case, if you feel more secure, this option can be disabled. To do this, all you have to do is access the settings of our iPhone, search for Instagram in them and in Location deactivate "Location exact«.
