WatchOS 9 News
There is a lot of talk about the news in iOS 16 and quite little about those that come to the watch with the new WatchOS 9. That is why we dedicate this article to tell you about everything new that comes to our watches.
Personally, everything new that iOS 16 brings has enchanted me, but everything that WatchOS 9 brings has made us fall in love. It seems that we are launching a watch because it brings a large number of new features to our device. Possibly, it is the version of WatchOS that has brought the most improvements and new features to an Apple Watch since
WatchOS 9 News:
New Spheres:
- Astronomy Sphere now showing current cloud cover and a map where you can see the stars.
- Lunar Sphere in which we can see a representation in real time of the phases of the moon surrounded by a Chinese, Hebrew or Islamic lunar calendar.
- The "Let's Play" sphere allows you to choose the color of the background on which animated numbers designed by Joi Fulton play .
- The Metropolitan dial allows you to customize the style and thickness of the watch numbers by turning the Digital Crown.
- All Nike spheres are here, available on more Apple Watch models.
- Advanced complications and background color editor available in California, Modular, Breathe, Typography and more.
- In the Portraits sphere you can now put photos of cats and dogs and landscapes, and customize the color of the background or the color of the whole photo.
- Ability to choose which watch face will be used when you have a focus mode activated.
WatchOS 9 News in Training:
- Ability to customize various training views, such as Splits, Segments or Activity Rings, and scroll through them as you train.
- New Heart Rate Zones view creates custom zones from your resting and maximum heart rate data, and displays the time you spent in each zone.
- The Altitude view shows your current altitude and elevation gain during run, bike, wheelchair run, hike, walk, and wheelchair workouts.
- The “Race Power” view shows the power in watts that you generate during a race. (Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 6 and later models)
- Adds running technique metrics (stride length, ground contact time, and vertical oscillation) to training views so you can monitor the efficiency of your running form. (Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 6 and later models)
- With Custom Workouts you can create interval series repetition workouts based on time, distance or a free target, with manual or automatic transitions to the next segment.
- The “Target Pace” mode helps you maintain your desired training pace with the use of prompts and a specific view.
- Multisport workouts allow you to perform duathlons or triathlons thanks to automatic detection of open water swim, pool swim, bike, stationary bike, run and treadmill workouts, and automatic transition to the next segment .
- You can customize the prompts displayed during workouts to see information about pace, power, cadence, and heart rate zones.
- The swimming pool training automatically detects if you use a swim board.
- SWOLF is a formula used to calculate swimming efficiency. In it, the time it takes to do a length and the number of strokes necessary to do it is added.
Fitness Improvements+:
- Displays instructions from your trainer and targets such as intensity, strokes per minute (rowing), revolutions per minute (cycling), and incline percentage (treadmill).
- Your trainer's instructions and personal exercise parameters are displayed on screen on compatible TVs and third-party devices.
News coming to Compass thanks to WatchOS 9:
- Compass offers more detailed information and zoomable views. (Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 5 and later models)
- The main face can display an analog compass and a digital view of heading and direction.
- Extended view shows an analog view of heading, plus inclination, altitude, and coordinates.
- Compass waypoints allow you to mark your position or a point of interest. (Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 6 and later models)
- If you get lost or disoriented, the Retrace feature uses GPS to show you how to retrace your steps. (Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 6 and later models)
News in the sleep function:
- The sleep stage tracking feature uses data from the accelerometer and heart rate sensor to detect how much time you've spent in each stage: awake, essential, deep, and REM sleep .
- Comparative graph showing sleeping time and heart and respiratory rates in the He alth app .
New medication function:
- Possibility of registering the medication on demand and programmed, with the amount and time of taking.
- Possibility to see the schedule of your medication and your record of the day.
- Reminders to record scheduled medication.
- With the complication of the Medication app you can see your schedules or open the app quickly.
History of atrial fibrillation:
- Weekly notifications for the estimated percentage of time spent in atrial fibrillation during the past week.
- It is prominently displayed which day of the week and at what time the highest atrial fibrillation value was recorded.
- In the He alth app on iPhone you can add lifestyle factors that can influence the time you've spent in atrial fibrillation, such as exercise, sleep, weight, alcohol consumption, and mindfulness minutes spent you have practiced.
- Generates a PDF to provide more information to he althcare providers.
- Designed for users 22 years and older with a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation.
Family Settings:
- The Podcasts app is now available, offering the ability to search, follow and download shows, and explore curated content.
- 3rd party email support now also includes Yahoo and Outlook email .
- You can now edit and share contact photos.
Accessibility:
- AssistiveTouch offers more quick actions to play or pause what's playing, pause or resume a workout, take a photo with camera control, and switch between map view and turn-by-turn directions in the Maps app.
- Pair Bluetooth keyboards with Apple Watch .
- Apple Watch mirroring allows you to control the watch from the iPhone paired via AirPlay. Instead of touching the watch face, you can use voice control, button control, or any other assistive function.
Other features and improvements in WatchOS 9:
- Low Power Mode maintains basic Apple Watch capabilities and temporarily turns off some background features, like the always-on display and heart rate notifications, to save battery life.
- With international roaming you can continue to use your mobile data connection when you travel to other countries. (Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 5 and later models)
- Apple Watch Series 7 and later have added more keyboard languages, including French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.
- The "Screen Time" communication security feature allows families to trigger alerts for their little ones if they receive or attempt to send nude photos using the Messages app.
- You will receive cycle disturbance notifications if your entered data shows a pattern of infrequent, irregular, prolonged periods, or persistent spotting.
- Apple Watch can now calculate a new parameter, cardiac recovery, and display the results in the He alth app.
- The Reminders app has been updated and now includes an edit feature so you can add data such as location, tags, and due dates.
- The Calendar app has been revamped and now lets you switch to day, list, and week views when you create new events.
- Podcasts has an enhanced experience where you can search, follow and unfollow shows, and discover new content in Listen.
- Apps that are running in the background are now displayed at the top of the Dock.
- Notifications are displayed in a thinner, simpler strip when you're actively wearing your Apple Watch.
