Night Shift Mode

A recent study has investigated how using mobile makes it more difficult to fall asleep. Prior to this, it was believed that browsing the phone disrupted sleep due to the blue light emitted by the device disrupting melatonin secretion and sleep cycles. That is why Apple launched the Night Shift mode but, according to the study that we show you below, this function does not improve the quality of sleep.

A new study from Brigham Young University (BYU) , published in the journal Sleep He alth , has questioned Apple's premise that sleep is better if Night Shift mode is activated.Researchers have surprisingly shown that Night Shift does not improve sleep quality.

Turn on iPhone Night Shift doesn't help you sleep better:

Since the blue light emitted by phones was believed to disrupt melatonin secretion and sleep cycles, Apple introduced the feature called Night Shift in 2016.

This feature adjusts screen colors to warmer tones after sunset to reduce blue light emission that strains the eyes. It was a before and after since after Apple many mobile manufacturers, if not all, included some kind of night mode function to help users sleep better.

To test this the research compared people's sleep outcomes in three categories:

  • Those who used their phone at night with Night Shift enabled.
  • People who used their phone at night without Night Shift.
  • Those who didn't use their mobile before going to bed at all.

The study included 167 adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who used mobile phones on a daily basis. They were asked to spend at least eight hours in bed and an accelerometer was attached to their wrist to record their sleep activity.

Investigation results:

People who did not use a phone before bed experienced superior sleep quality compared to those who used a phone with or without Night Shift on. This group got seven hours of sleep, which is closer to the recommended eight to nine hours per night, and saw a slight difference in sleep quality.

Within the group that used the phone before bed, people got six hours of sleep and there were no differences in sleep outcomes based on whether participants used Night Shift or not.

Researchers claim that Night Shift can darken your screen, but Night Shift alone won't help you fall asleep or improve sleep quality.

Who knows if the solution to improve your sleep quality isn't Shift Night and if it's putting the iPhone screen in black and white?.
