iPhone Portrait Orientation Lock

To all of us who have the orientation lock activated, we remember that it is the option that allows us to prevent the iPhone screen from showing the interface horizontally, it bothers us having that, for example, deactivate it to be able to play a specific game or to watch videos from Youtube The automation that we can do in the app Shortcuts works for us to come from pearls to many.

Since the arrival of iOS 14.5 we can create an automation with which we can tell the device with which applications we want that lock to be deactivated. This is a wonderful thing because we will never again have to access the control center to activate or deactivate it.

Automation for iPhone portrait orientation lock :

In the following video we explain it to you in a more visual way. If you are more of reading, below we do it in writing:

To create the automation, do the following:

  • Open the Shortcuts app.
  • Select, from the lower menu, the "Automation" option
  • When entering the «Automation» menu, click on the «+» that appears in the upper right part of the screen and click on «Create personal automation».
  • Now we select the “App” function.
  • From the screen that appears, press "App" and select, for example, the YouTube app.
  • Of the two options that appear below, we activate "Opens" and click on Next.
  • Click on "Add action" and put the words "Define orientation lock" in the search engine.

Set Vertical Orientation Lock

  • From the menu that appears now, click on "Activate/deactivate" and from a small screen that appears at the bottom of the screen, click on "Adjust".
  • Now by clicking on "Activate" we can activate or deactivate the vertical orientation lock of the iPhone. In this case we should say that it will be deactivated since we want to deactivate it when entering YouTube to see the videos in a horizontal position.

Activate or deactivate according to your interest

  • Click on "Next" and now we deactivate the "Request confirmation" option so that it does not ask us, every time we enter YouTube, whether or not we want to activate the automation. That way it will do it automatically. It will ask us "Do not request confirmation" to which we will put in "Do not request".
  • After this, click on "ok" and we already have the automation configured.

Tap the following link if you don't like notifications appearing every time the automation runs.

Create another automation to activate the lock when exiting the configured application:

This doesn't end here as we'll have to create another automation so that when you exit the app we've set up, it re-enables the orientation lock. To do this we will carry out an automation like the one we have already done, but we will have to make two modifications:

  • In point 6 instead of marking "Opens" we must mark "Closes".
  • In point 9 instead of selecting "Deactivate" the vertical orientation lock, we will have to select "Activate".

We can carry out this automation with all the applications that we want.
