Automations on iPhone and iPad

We start with a series of iOS tutorials in which we are going to teach you how to create shortcuts and automations in iOS. Little by little we will teach how to create them, through examples, to take advantage of this interesting function of our devices.

This time we are going to teach how to create an automation of an action, according to the location in which we are. Based on a video from our Youtube channel, which is very useful to explain it, we are going to tell you how to configure the iPhone so that, depending on where we are, a function is activated or deactivated in concrete.

How to create automations on iPhone according to our location or location:

Before starting to develop the tutorial, we recommend you watch this video. Right at minute 3:28, we discussed the possibility of creating an automation for our device to activate and deactivate the "Voice Control" function.

If you want to see more videos like this, click below to subscribe to our Youtube channel APPerlas TV.

Based on the video, we want to create an automation that allows us to activate the “Voice Control” when we leave the house and to deactivatewhen we get back to her. In this way, when we are outside our home, it will be activated and we will be able to unlock the iPhone with our voice, avoiding having to remove our gloves (if we have a device with Touch ID) or the mask (in case you have an iPhone with Face ID) .

You must have location enabled for Shortcuts. Accessing Settings/Privacy/Location we must activate it in the Shortcuts app.

To do this, we access the app Shortcuts and click on the "Automation" option that appears in the menu that we see at the bottom of the screen.

Now, to create a new automation, click on the "+" button that appears at the top right.

On the screen that appears, press the option «Create personal automation». When doing this we will see that a series of actions is shown on the screen.

Actions to configure an automation in iOS

We are going to base ourselves on our location, so we will click, within the "Travel" section, on "Exit". After that, we will click on “Location”.

Now we will select the place from which, when leaving it, the «Voice control» function will be activated. In our case we will configure the location of our house. We can expand or reduce, at will, the range of meters in which, when leaving, the function will be activated.

Set the location you will use

After having it, we click "Ok" and if we want it to be activated at any time, we select the "Any time" option. If we want it to do it in a specific hour interval, we will select and configure it in "Time interval" .

Now click on the "Next" button to add the action that we want to execute when leaving the configured area. Click on "Add action" and in the search engine that appears at the top of the screen, we put "Voice control". When doing so, it will appear on the screen.

Search for function in automations on iPhone

Click on it and we will see that the action is added. We see that "Activate" appears, which indicates that when leaving that configured area, the action will be activated.

Triggers action when leaving configured location

We have to say that the action does not trigger itself. We receive a notification saying that if we want to activate that created automation, we must click the "Execute" button to execute it.

After this, click on "Next" and on the screen that appears, click on "ok". In this way we will have one of the automations created.

How to disable an action in the automation function in iOS:

Now it's time to create another automation to deactivate the “Voice Control” function when you get home. To do this we carry out the same steps that we have explained before, but changing only two things.

  • When starting to configure the automation, we must select «Arrive» . This is because we want to disable the “Voice Control” function when we get home.
  • When it tells us that the action will be activated, we must click on "Activate" to select the "Deactivate" option.

Deactivate when reaching the configured place

This way when we get home the iPhone sends us a notification reminding us that we have an automation that we must execute so that the function we have configured is deactivated.

It is very easy to create automations as you may have seen. As soon as you practice a bit, I'm sure you'll be able to create magnificent automations.

We hope, through our example, we have laid the seed for you to start creating your custom automations.

Greetings.
