Always On Screen
Since I got the Apple Watch Series 5, I haven't stopped doing battery autonomy tests. I've turned on and off, above all, one of the features that sets it apart from its predecessor, the series 4. The function of having the screen always active.
The truth is that it is an outstanding novelty if you are one of the people who, like me, sometimes cannot do the typical wrist turn, or touch the screen or crown, so that the watch is activated. Now it is much more comfortable, for example, to be having a coffee and without moving your arm, sneakily look at the time.Or be exercising and not have to make a gesture to check the time, some notification, your progress .
But it is true that many of you may have thought, does that function consume a lot of battery? It is worth keeping it active. Today I am going to give you data so that you can decide whether to have it activated or not. At the end of the article I will tell you what my choice has been.
Does it take a lot of battery to have the always-on display on Apple Watch series 5 and series 6?:
I have carried out the tests using the watch, almost identically, for two days. It may be that one day I received more notification than the other, but I assure you that it was nothing to take into account.
The first day I set my watch at 8:00. in the morning and I took it off at midnight. . I used it with the always-on display function ON. The percentage of battery that I have left after taking it off was 34%:
Battery with screen always on
Consumption is around 25% of battery every 6 hours. This is, more or less, an estimated consumption of 4.2% per hour.
The second day had the same duration, 8h. at 12:00 a.m. This time use the Apple Watch with the always-on display OFF feature. The battery percentage at the end of the day was 53%:
Battery without display always active
Battery consumption is around 18% of battery every 6 hours. This is an estimated consumption of 3% per hour.
The configuration of the other functions of the watch, during the two days of the test, was the same.
Now assess yourselves by seeing the consumption. Is it worth it to always have the Apple Watch Series 5 screen active?
Opinion on the always-on display feature in Apple Watch Series 5 and series 6:
Personally if I have it activated. As I have told you, I am a person who looks a lot at the time, notifications, some installed complication and always having to make the gesture to activate or touch the screen to do so, I often find it annoying. Having it always activated prevents me from being able to see the time, notifications from different perspectives.
The 1, 2% battery saving, per hour, that disabling that function has, does not compensate me. It may be that I haven't charged the watch for two days, but how would I get to the end of the second day if I make more intense use of the Watch on one of the two days? That is why I prefer to charge it every night, regardless of the battery percentage it has, at the end of the day.
It's good to know that turning off the feature saves battery life. That way, whenever we are short of autonomy, we can do without it for as long as we consider appropriate.
As with the screen always on I arrive with a good percentage of charge at the end of the day, I have decided, for now, to have it always active. What do you think of my choice? What do you think about it?
