Google Plus closes
It was seen coming and Google has decided to close its social network for consumers. On Monday it was revealed that the private data of hundreds of thousands of users was potentially exposed, due to a bug that the Alphabet company kept quiet.
Google Vice President of Engineering, Ben Smith, commented on the Google blog that “Google+ currently has low usage and engagement: 90% of Google+ user sessions Google+ last less than five seconds.”
It seems that they have taken advantage of the news of their major security breach, to close it, but what was leaking that security breach?
Data were exposed in Google plus due to the programming error in the app?:
The bug gave third-party developers the ability to access users' private profile data. This error occurred in a period that would go from 2015 to March 2018. It is estimated that the affected accounts have been about 500,000.
Google confirms that the bug was fixed last March. The data that was exposed were optional profile fields such as name, email, occupation, gender and age. The company has commented that the ruling did not affect any other data that has been published on Google+ or any other service such as messages, Google account data , phone numbers, or G. Suite content.
The company identified the security breach within an initiative called Project Storbe. This project was designed to review third-party access to account data on Google and Android systems.
It is estimated that 438 applications used the programming interface that allowed access to private user data.
Announce that the Google Plus will close, for consumers, in the next 10 months. Specifically at end of August 2019 This means that Google+ will not die completely. They will continue to support enterprises, as Ben Smith comments on the Google blog “At the same time, we have many enterprise customers who find great value in using Google+ within their companies. We have decided to focus on our enterprise efforts and will be releasing new features designed specifically for enterprises. We will share more information in the coming days."
