After the latest scandals generated by Facebook, many people have lost confidence in this social network. The field of privacy in social networks and messaging apps is a very sensitive issue. No one likes that they play with our data and that they circulate through the network without control.
That is why since the news appeared that Whatsapp is going to migrate to Facebook's servers, many people ask themselves the question that surely you are also asking now Will our Whatsapp privacy be threatened by this change?.
The change is being gradual. Belgium was the first country where the messaging app started using Facebook's servers. A few days ago Israel joined and, little by little, the other countries will do so.
Whatsapp privacy when using Facebook servers
Facebook Servers
The fact that WhatsApp is starting to use the Facebook servers shouldn't worry us. This only ensures a better quality of the connection. Surely, as soon as the change is consummated in our country, we will rarely see WhatsApp down again.
The privacy of everything we share is assured. All chats and calls are encrypted so no one can access to read or listen to them.
WhatsApp and Facebook, only have access to message metadata. These data are, for example, if the message being sent is an image, a video, a sticker, etc. its date, the recipient's telephone number, etc. As you can see, he has access to information that does not reveal what we share.
The content of the message (image, video, text, title) is encrypted, so it is not visible to WhatsApp, or Facebook or for anyone.
Messages are encrypted in an .ENC file and cannot be opened without the sender's and recipient's phone numbers.
Our opinion on privacy in WhatsApp when changing Facebook servers:
We think that the encryption of messages is not a problem. In fact, it is a guarantee that those messages cannot be seen by someone other than the people who interact with it.
The problem is that metadata, such as "last time", "online time", "whom I messaged", etc, which are not needed after a certain time, should be deleted from the servers and apparently they are not removed. This means that Facebook can learn many other things about us.
Also, looking at the trajectory of Facebook and the latest scandals it has gotten into, we wouldn't be surprised if all this was a farce.
Although we are positive and we hope you have learned, especially from the last scandal, and don't fail us again. Especially in the field of privacy on WhatsApp.
And what do you think of this? We look forward to your contributions ?
