iBoot Source Code Leak for iOS 9
Last Thursday there was a leak of the source code of the iBoot of iOS 9. An anonymous user posted a portion of the code on GitHub.
Apple confirmed the leak was real.
This leak could allow new ways to jailbreak iPhone and find vulnerabilities more easily.
What is iBoot?
It is responsible for the secure boot of iOS.
It checks that the kernel is correct and is signed by Apple. We could say that it is something similar to BIOS on windows pc.
With the latest versions, those from Cupertino have made it increasingly difficult to jailbreak the device.
Should we worry about security?
This is one of the biggest leaks ever Apple, as the iBoot source code of iOS 9 contains the base functionality of the operating system.
This opens up a number of possibilities:
- The possibility of jailbreak .
- And the ability to run iOS on chips not designed by Apple.
Despite this, Apple has stated that the security of iOS does not depend on source code alone. Rather, it has several layers of security.
According to Motherboard, the iOS 9iBoot source code leak was made by an intern who was working in 2016 at Apple. The ex-employee sent the code to some friends related to the jailbreak community .
The leak included internal Apple files and tools.
But, despite the fact that we have found out these days, the code has been circulating on the internet for more than a year. It was at the time of reaching GitHub that it was echoed in networks and media.
Apple has formally requested GitHub to remove the code, via the Digital Age Copyright Act (DMCA), as it has been posted without the permission of the owner.
GitHub has removed all repositories, removing all download links.
The bitten apple company has stated that this act does not pose a danger to users' devices, it is an outdated code and iOS has more layers of security.
