We spoke with the creator of the Video Explorer app for iOS, he tells us where the idea of creating this app came from, his impressions and above all, he will show us the apps he has on his iPhone.

We leave you with the interview with Sergio:

  • Tell us about yourself:

I'm Sergio Abril, I'm a quarter of a century old, and I'm studying Architecture. More specifically, doing the final project. I have always been interested in computers and technology, as tools to help us on a day-to-day basis, and because of how easy and fast it is to create something useful (or not so useful).

Also, I've long admired Apple's ability to embed good design into their products, as part of the user experience, and not as a mere add-on. It is something that seems very accurate to me, and that it seems that it has always been difficult to include in the world of computing, more concerned with other aspects.

  • How did you come up with the idea of creating an app like Video Explorer?

Alternatives existed, but they didn't work quite right. And of course, in my opinion, they had some careless designs. At first, I dedicated myself to sending emails to some of the ones I used, asking about the future integration of iOS7, or possible visual and functional improvements, but I did not receive an answer (that's why I try to take care of the user service aspect, nobody likes write an email for nothing). I had already made a simple game (like Lite Fish, which I have in the App Store), and I said to myself, why not try it with an application? Basically, like everything else, it arose from a need of its own: to be able to view and save videos on the iPad/iPhone, with a simple interface and as functional as possible.

  • What did you think when you saw that your app was rising in the App Store?

The truth is that it went up in a very short time, every day I had a better position and I couldn't quite believe it. The first thing I thought is that it wouldn't last more than a week, and that after a few days it would be lost among the last posts. In fact, I keep thinking about it, because these things don't last forever, no matter how hard you try to keep them

What is clear is that for my expectations, it has already been a complete success; And it goes without saying that the support shows in the form of emails or reviews are priceless, and something that I thank all users for.

  • Can you make a living as an iOS app developer?

It's difficult, but not impossible. In fact, and unfortunately, there are many incredible Apps that, due to bad luck or little, do not become known, and therefore do not generate what is necessary. My previous game, Lite Fish, which is far from incredible but it took me a lot of work, before it was free it was paid, and it was difficult for me to amortize the price of the license that Apple charges to publish an App in a whole year (€80 ).

However, if you manage to have an App in the Top20, or many Apps in worse positions, you can get some money (of course, nothing exorbitant, but you can live). The key is to make Apps useful and functional, do a little bit and cross your fingers!

  • What app project do you have in mind?

Right now, between my final year project (which I finish this year) and keeping Video Explorer up to date, I'm pretty tight on time; After all, being behind Video Explorer alone, I can't diversify too much

But as soon as I finish the first thing, I'll start to see what I can contribute or improve for the iOS user. It is true that I already have some App that we could classify as 'Utility' in mind, but I have to mature it

  • What five apps are essential for you?

Evernote, Telegram, CloudMagic, Dropbox and Video Explorer? I don't know if they are essential, but of course they are the ones I use the most lately (ignoring social networks like twitter, facebook, vine)

  • For you, and without naming any of your apps, what is the best app in the App Store in terms of interface?
There are many good Apps that have managed to implement a fantastic design, but if I had to pick one, if only because I've been using it recently and it has surprised me, I would say CloudMagic (Yes, it is giving me some email synchronization error , everything must be said)
  • Which apps are essential to manage application creation?

Photoshop and illustrator for graphic tweaks, Xcode of course for programming, and TestflightApp to manage your trial versions and get other people to try them.

  • What do you expect from the next iPhone 6?

Although I must be one of the few who doesn't ask for a bigger screen, it seems inevitable; I hope it comes with a reduction in the frame, and not a significant increase in the phone itself.

Of course, better battery life is always welcome; For the rest, we will have a redesign (we will see if it is successful or not), a better camera, and we will see if they use the sapphire that is so talked about in any way.

Speculating about the future iPhone is always dangerous, I prefer to wait and see if they surprise me It's not the first time I've gone “hype” with predictions, and then comes the “disappointment”! We'll see.

So far the interview with Sergio, then we leave you with all the APPerlas he has on his iPhone
