The word ablation comes from the Latin “ablatĭo”, “ablatiōnis”, lexically composed by the prefix “ab” of separation or deprivation, the root “ferre” that refers to carrying or carrying, plus the suffix “tio” or “cion” of action and effect; then according to its etymology, the word ablation is the action and effect of separating by cutting, or removing an argano or segment. In the area of medicine and surgery, ablation is understood as the amputation, extirpation or mutilation of any of the organs, extremities or members of the body, by means of a surgical-type operation; but it can also be by the application or administration of physical means such as heat, radiation, cold or chemical compounds such as drugs.
There are several types of ablation in medicine such as radiofrequency ablation , amputation, lobectomy, lumpectomy, mastectomy, circumcision, and hysterectomy. Radiofrequency ablation is a procedure whereby an area of the electrical conduction system of the heart, tumor, or other dysfunctional tissue is ablated using heat from alternating high-frequency current in order to treat a condition.
Amputation is the separation or fissure of a limb or limb from the body through a type of trauma called pulling or surgery. Lobectomy is the surgical removal of the lobe of a gland or organ. Lumpectomy is the removal of a tumor, either benign or malignant. Mastectomy is the removal of the breasts, partially or completely. Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin of the penis that covers the glans, allowing it to be exposed. And finally the hysterectomy is the uprooting of the uterus.
There are also some non-medical ablation practices, which are performed for religious, cultural or other reasons. It is about genital mutilation, which is carried out in different countries around the world, but in others it is considered an act of violence and repudiation. An example of this type of practice resides in the African continent where they are classified as one of the most ancestral customs and of great importance for these ethnic groups.
In the field of geology, the term ablation is used to describe the erosion that occurs on a relief thanks to the activity of different chemical and physical processes.
