It is a concept that is understood as the action and effect of adapting, a verb that refers to the accommodation or adjustment of something with respect to something else. The notion, as it arises from practice, has different meanings depending on the field where it is applied: for example, adaptation is making an object or mechanism perform different functions than those for which it was built.
The adaptation process is also related to changes during the life of the organism. In physiological terms, the word adaptation is used to describe the adjustment of an organism's phenotype to its environment. This is called adaptability, physiological adaptation, or acclimatization. However, this is not adaptation.
The adaptation processes in many cases are very difficult, as is the case with immigrants, who must adapt to new cultural patterns if they wish to integrate into the community they arrive in. Some people are more inclined to adapt to change than others, and some can readjust even in extremely tough situations and be successful. The latter is known as resilience.
In the early stages of life, it is very common for babies to require an adaptation process to live with other children and adults outside their family environment. This occurs when children are required to attend daycare or when they enter school.
In nature, living beings must adapt to the circumstances of their environment, as happens with plants that inhabit desert areas, which store water in their leaves. This is achieved after long periods and allows the survival of the species.
It should be noted that in the field of literature and film, the term adaptation is used. In this specific case we speak of adaptation when a literary work is subject to a series of modifications and arrangements, to a transformation, to take it to the big screen or even to theatrical stages. An example of this might be Dan Brown's book "The Da Vinci Code," which was adapted to develop his film that had the title and starred Tom Hanks.
