Aphasia is a word that describes a type of disorder that affects human language due to certain lesions in different areas of the brain that are responsible for controlling language. the term comes from the Greek "ἀφασία" or "aphasia", formed by the prefix "a" which is equivalent to "without", in addition to the voice "phanai" which means "to speak", and the suffix "ia" which refers to "Quality", then according to its etymology aphasia means that it is the quality of not being able to speak. This type of disorder can make the process of reading, writing and even verbally expressing what you want to say difficult or cumbersome.
Aphasia consists of the loss of ability to produce or understand language, caused by a series of lesions in the brain, specifically in the areas that specialize in this language phenomenon. It is a disorder that is especially related to oral language and can be generated during the acquisition of language in children or it can also be an acquired loss in adults. The word aphasia was established by a French doctor named Armand Trousseau in 1864.
This disorder is generally more common in adults who have suffered a cerebrovascular accident, more than all the one caused by thrombotic or embolic ischemia. But also people with different traumas, brain infection or a neoplasm; such as infections found or diffuse in the brain, among which we can find brain abscess or encephalitis; tumors of the central nervous system, head trauma or degenerative diseases such as the so-called Parkinson's disease.
There are four different types of aphasia that are: expressive aphasia, which occurs when the individual knows or knows what he is going to transmit or communicate but this is difficult for him to do. Global aphasia, is when the person is unable to speak, understand what is said, in addition to reading or writing. Receptive aphasia is one that occurs when the patient can hear his voice or can read a writing, but cannot fully understand it. Anomic aphasia, the person has great difficulty using the correct words when describing events, objects or places.
