The term Amish is used to refer to a Protestant, Anabaptist Christian religious group (which means baptized again). They are distinguished by being simple people, their way of life is modest and traditional. They are characterized by radically opposing the use of modern technologies and comforts. They are generally a tight-knit community, descendants of German and Swiss immigrants. They are currently located in 22 settlements within the United States and Canada.
The Amish community arose in Switzerland in 1963 when it separated from the Mennonite church, this separation was due to differences of opinion between them, Jakob Ammann one of the Anabaptist leaders, felt that some of his brothers were not kept totally separated from the world and that there was a need for spiritual renewal, he believed that the wayward should separate from the church, which was not happening, so he decided to leave the Mennonite church, and those who followed him were called Amish.
The Amish left for the United States and founded the first and most important settlement in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, around 1720. Their beliefs are based on the bible, life out of town, isolation from the modern world. They are supporters of humility and pacifism, of the simple, natural life and work.
Among their main habits and customs are: their resistance to the use of electronic devices, they do not use cars or electricity. Women and men wear modest clothes, women dresses below the knee and a kind of hat, white for single women and black for married women, men dark suits and wear wide-brimmed hats with a 17th or 18th century style. The Amish men during their singleness are always clean shaven, once they get married they grow beards, they never wear mustaches since the mustache is a symbol of militarism. Buttons are prohibited on their clothing, and hooks and grommets are used instead to keep clothing closed.
Men are engaged in agriculture, and women are engaged in the home and raising children; As children grow up, they have the opportunity to choose the life they want.
