Amoxicillin is a medicine belonging to the group of bactericides. It is a semi-synthetic drug, derived from penicillin, whose function is to fight infections caused by bacteria. Its effectiveness lies in preventing the growth of said bacteria. It should be noted that this drug does not have any effect on the flu, or any other viral infection.
Amoxicillin comes in different types of presentation: capsules of 250 and 500mg, suspension of 125 and 250mg, sachets of 125, 250 and 500mg. It is usually taken every 12 hours or every 8 hours with or without food. It is a drug that should only be administered under a medical prescription.
This medicine is used as the first option to treat infections of varying degrees of difficulty. Its mechanism of action consists of inhibiting the formation of the cell wall in certain bacteria, hindering the binding of the protein chains that make up the cell wall, causing the death of the bacteria.
Amoxicillin has a duration of time in the body between 6 to 8 hours, being eliminated through the urine 24 hours after its ingestion.
It is important to note that people who suffer from diabetes can only take this drug under medical supervision, as it can cause an increase in glucose levels. In the case of pregnant women, it is also recommended to do it under medical supervision and only when it is extremely necessary. During the lactation stage, doctors do not recommend the use of amoxicillin as this remedy is transferred directly into breast milk.
Amoxicillin is used to fight diseases such as throat infections, pneumonia, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, infections of the skin, nose, ears, gonorrhea.
The use of amoxicillin in patients allergic to penicillin and in hypertensive patients is not recommended.
The most common side effects caused by the administration of this medicine are vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea.
