Medieval art is known as a time in the history of art that developed over a long time for a large area of space. During the Middle Ages, which spans from the 10th to the 15th century, they represent more than a millennium of this type of art used in regions of North Africa, Europe and the Middle East. That is why medieval art is considered one of the most extended periods in the history of art.
It includes various artistic movements at different times, among which can be included regional, local and national, also counting on various genres, a series of flowering stages which were defined as rebirth, also has various outstanding works of art and artists themselves who in the High Middle Ages remained anonymous. In the period called Late Antiquity, the classical artistic heritage was incorporated by the Roman Empire with contributions also from primitive Christianity and barbarian culture.
The art of medieval times is closely related to religion, since in that period the Church had great power and influence within the lives of individuals. In this way, theocentrism was the main characteristic element within medieval culture. The main function of art during the Middle Ages was mainly religious, since it itself served as a tool to lead the people to religion, in short, it had a didactic character. The political-administrative organization used mostly in this period was based on the feudal system.
At this stage of history it is necessary to know that there were two styles, during the so-called flourishing, there were the Romanesque and the Gothic styles, being able to point out a common element and that was that medieval architects carried out their projects for eternity. The quality of his works, even today, endure as a legacy of history. The first of these styles emerged, thanks to the religious order of Cluny, which was characterized by its moral austerity, in the 11th century, in France and Germany, and spread with common characteristics throughout the continent.
