The term comes from the Latin "augur", "augūris" which means "diviner"; In Ancient Rome the word augur was used to designate that priestly figure who made divinations or predictions by the way the birds fluttered, that is, he was the Roman officiant who officially practiced divination or augury and augur is where the word comes from " augury ”that according to the RAE manifests this refers to an omen, an indication of something future or announcement. This practice of divinations carried out by augurs, which is the plural of augur, is as ancient as the man himself.
These characters date from the establishment of Rome, their body corresponded to one of the four famous priestly institutes of Ancient Rome; his position was official, however there were also private augurs. Only those designated as magistrates and in special precincts were allowed to consult the official augurs; the official position was indefinite or perpetual, coinciding with magistracies or other types of ecclesiastical positions. They had for their profession two types of writings that were commentaries and rituals, of which the first compiled summaries of the performances and the second included fixed formulas.
There were two types of augurs, those who consulted the deities through different rituals; and those who interpreted the manifestations of said deities through observation. The man throughout his life has tried to know what destiny holds for him; and specifically in the case of augurs, the divination of the future was developed through the observation and perception of nature itself or of the different phenomena that participated in it, such as the flight of birds, the direction of the wind, the position of mammals, among others.
