A scholarship is a stipend or total or partial, but temporary, pension that is granted to someone to continue or complete their studies. It is also used, by extension, to refer to other grants, such as a research project, sports or cultural activity, artistic work or services (for example, scholarship for books, for dining, for transportation, among others).
A scholarship is considered to be any economic contribution granted by educational institutions (universities and schools), foundations, companies, banks or any other entity, connected to a basic objective of a training nature.
The grant holder who receives the subsidy, punctually or periodically, undertakes to carry out some type of work or study that results in their training, and therefore, for their own benefit.
It follows then that the main purpose of the scholarship is to facilitate the study and training of the scholarship holder and not to reward the work done; that is, not to the obtaining by the entity that grants it of services or jobs that cover their productive needs that, if not carried out by the fellow, would have to be entrusted to other people.
The scholarships include benefits such as tuition payments, transportation, subsistence allowance (money), medical insurance, allocation of textbooks and teaching materials, allowance for thesis, local study trips, housing, etc.
The word scholarship also has another meaning; It is the insignia that students used to wear as part of their clothing, and that today is used only for formal acts. The scholarship is brought by the schoolboys on the mantle of the same or different color.
It consists of a cloth girdle, about eight inches wide that is crossed in front of the chest and descends down the back. In other places it is hung from the neck to close to the waist or legs.
