A bed is a piece of furniture that is used as a place to sleep or relax.
Most modern beds consist of a soft, padded mattress on a bed frame, the mattress resting on a solid base, often wooden slats, or a vaulted base. Many beds include a spring spring base, which is an oversized mattress box that contains wood and springs that provide additional support and suspension for the mattress. Beds are available in many sizes, ranging from cribs and infant-size cribs, to small beds for a childor adult, to queen and king-size beds designed for two adults. While most beds are single mattresses on a fixed frame, there are other varieties, such as the murphy bed, which folds into a wall, the daybed, which folds out from a sofa, and the bunk bed, which provides two mattresses. on two levels Temporary beds include inflatable air mattress and folding camp crib. Some beds contain neither a padded mattress nor a bed frame, such as the hammock, which is considered one of the most comfortable places to rest while rocking from side to side. Some beds are made especially for animals.
Beds may have a headboard to rest against, and may have side rails and feet(or "footers"). "Headboard only" beds may incorporate a "dust ruffle", "bed skirt", or " valence sheet " to hide the bed frame. To support the head, a pillow made of a soft, padded material is usually placed on top of the mattress. Some forms of cover blanket are often used to insulate the sleeper, often sheets or a comforter. Bedding is the removable, non-furniture part of a bed, allowing these components to be washed or ventilated.
Bed sizes vary considerably around the world, and most countries have their own standards and terminology. Although the “double” size appears to be standard among English-speaking countries, based on the imperial measurement of 137cm x 190cm, sizes for other types of beds tend to vary. Continental European sizes differ, not simply due to the use of the metric system.
