What is carpe diem? »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

The term Carpe Diem is an expression that is derived from Latin and is attributed to the Roman poet Horacio, who wrote it in the first book of the Odes: “Carpe Diem, quam minium credulous postero”, which when translated into Spanish means “take advantage of every day, don't trust tomorrow ”. Horacio with this phrase told his readers that life must be enjoyed at the moment, since the future is unknown.

For Carpe Diem, the really important thing is to value every second of life and know how to make the most of the time spent in that earthly world.

Many times the passage of time allows people to reflect on what they have done in their lives, reaching the conclusion that it is very short and death is something that sooner or later will inevitably come. The fact that all human beings are aware of the finiteness of life, allows them to think what the meaning of it is, and what can be done to live it fully.

Those who lived during the Middle Ages, could understand it through the phrase of Homer in his extraordinary work " the Odes ". Horacio believes that the only true thing that human beings have is death, that is why it is necessary for man to enjoy life while it lasts.

At present this expression has been taken by many as a lifestyle, people who think in this way, live their life as if it were the last day of it. You are not sure of the future, since it can bring any setback, be it illness or accident, so you never know exactly what will happen, it is something totally impossible to predict. Therefore, long-term plans may not work, since time flies by and you must live now.

On the other hand, there are those who think that this way of seeing life is a bit irresponsible since it is wrong for them not to think about the future, since people must bear in mind that it will be theirs when they are old, each individual must work, to be able to ensure a quiet life, in the twilight of its existence.

It is important to point out that this expression, on a literary level, has been taken as a recurring theme in countless works; Considering an invitation to no one to waste time, to enjoy time here on earth, without stressing about what will happen tomorrow. Carpe Diem was very popular during the Renaissance.

In short, the only real thing that living beings have is death and it is important to keep it in mind at every moment; otherwise, life will pass without realizing it and the time will come when you will notice that time has passed and life was not enjoyed.
