The celam or the Latin American episcopal council, is a council where the different bishops of the Catholic churches are grouped, these bishops belong to the Latin American region and the Caribbean, this group of people are in charge of exposing the different difficulties that arise in the churches in each region, reaching a consensus to achieve the solvation of the problem, as well as addressing issues about the situations evidenced in society, the bishops debate and propose project ideas that achieve the promotion of the values of a correct society, as well as well as jobs that attract the attention of young people so that they increase their attendance in the Catholic Church.
The origin of celam dates back to 1955, where for the first time there was a meeting of all the bishops of Latin America in Rio de Janeiro on the 25th of July in the aforementioned year, this was thanks to the request made by the Pope in force that responded by the name of “ Pius XII ”, the proposal being accepted gracefully, despite the fact that meetings were held periodically between dioceses of each nation, no one had proposed a meeting where there was a grouping of bishops belonging to a continent. Every few years this meeting is held, whose organization is in charge of the president of the council, currently the Colombian Rubén Gómez (Archbishop of Bogotá).
As a conference is held, the topics to be discussed are different but all are aimed at preserving the good of society; In 1955 the first Latin American episcopal conference was held by Pope Pius XII where it was explained what function each meeting would have, after this the second conference was held in 1968 in Colombian lands, where issues such as the promotion of peace, justice were discussed and education in the poorest towns of each region, ideas were also raised for the promotion of the gospel through the practice of catechesis.
In 1979, the third Latin American episcopal conference was held in Mexico City, where they spoke of techniques to awaken interest in young people for the Catholic Church, as well as how to reduce the level of youth involved in drugs, mafias, robberies, murders among other criminal actions through social awareness and the role of the church as manufacturers of society.
