Cesarean section is defined as the type of surgical intervention, in which a surgical incision is carried out in the abdominal area and the mother's uterus, which is known as a laparotomy, this is performed with the aim of extracting one or more babies. According to the WHO, the use of this surgical technique is recommended only when a vaginal delivery could trigger medical complications. It is important to distinguish between cesarean section and episiotomy, the latter is an incision in the perineum that is carried out to facilitate delivery. For its part, the cesarean section is done on the pelvis. Initially, cesarean section was carried out only when the mother died and the fetus was still alive in the womb.
Over time, it began to be performed in those cases in which delivery through the vagina was extremely complicated. At present, this is the obstetric surgical operation that is carried out most frequently, this is because it is considered the safest procedure to avoid the complications of vaginal delivery and at the same time to ensure fetal well-being.
Those women who have this surgery can receive general anesthesia, either epidural or spinal. In the case of epidural anesthesia, it numbs the lower part of the body, through an injection that is placed right in the spine. On the other hand, spinal anesthesia, like the previous one, numbs the lower part of the body, however, in this case the injection is made directly into the spinal fluid.
Using this technique, the baby is born through cuts in the abdomen and uterus. Subsequently, the uterus is closed using stitches for this, which dissolve over the days. These points will also be responsible for closing the skin of the belly.
It is important to note that cesarean delivery is completely safe, however, for this reason it is still a surgery that involves risks and complications, which must be taken into account. Recovery from a cesarean section generally takes longer than a vaginal delivery.
