Greek colonization took its first steps from the 8th century, when the Greeks threw themselves to colonize the Mediterranean coast in order to extend their civilization. The colonization of these territories transformed Greek life in all aspects and with the passage of time it was one of the most important stages in the history of the Hellenes.
One of the most important reasons for this colonial movement is the excessive concentration of the population, which every day lived tighter in a miserable and unfortunate soil. On the other hand, the noble families, instead of facilitating the distribution of the lands, insisted on acquiring the greatest amount of it, enslaving the small owners. This is why rural workers chose to seek new regions to settle.
The political situation also contributed, since in those cities under the command of the nobles, there were struggles between themselves and with the other social classes, where the defeated had to abandon their land and go in search of a new homeland, much more generous and appropriate.
Among the first territories to be colonized by the Greeks, is the coastal area of Macedonia, where the Greeks established various colonies. They then proceeded to colonize the route of the straits that lead to the Black Sea. Upon reaching the Black Sea, the Greeks considered this area the perfect setting for colonization. Navigating it was a great adventure for the Greeks.
It is important to note that the Greek colonies were totally independent populations from the metropolis. It was only united by a series of religious, cultural and economic ties.
All this from the Greek colonizations led to an extensive development in the commercial area and in navigation. All the economic progress promoted the appearance of the currency, since until then, the method used by them was barter.
