What is a region? »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

Each nation shares various characteristics: population, political system, economy, history, and culture. This is how each country can be distinguished from another, also taking into account other factors, such as the social aspect. It should be noted that, in the same way, there are customs that can not only be found in a specific country, but in a large part of the continent in which it is located. However, a method has been found to group the population, according to slightly more specific customs, similar economic and labor practices, as well as identical natural settings, with a dimension that can vary.

Previously, the use of the term was oriented to the distinction of territories that were very close to the limits with other lands, meaning that was given from the original function of the word " mark ", used to refer to the limits territorial. Until the year 1780 this practice was maintained, therefore, the edition of the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy of that year, defined a region as "territory that includes a town with all its surroundings". However, it has not been possible to fully define what a region is, nor has it been possible to impose a general idea about its use.

Nowadays, the regions are evoked, mainly, to group certain communities that have certain affinities, whether in the agricultural, historical or service fields. It is worth highlighting the natural regions, which are determined not by the corresponding administrative divisions, but by the characteristics of the surrounding environments (hydrography, relief, geology). In addition to the traditional ones, the regions have also been used to group certain indigenous ethnic groups or even judicial groups.
