Conjunctivitis is an infection that can occur in any individual, and that can occur from various causes. This is a benign type infection, however, it is important that it be treated to avoid more serious complications. In itself this is an inflammation of the conjunctiva (hence its name), which is the membrane that covers the sclera or the white portion of the eye and the inner portion of the eyelids.
As mentioned above, it can affect anyone, however, it is more common in children, in which case it can appear as an outbreak of several cases. Conjunctivitis is a very common condition, this is because the membrane is directly in contact with the environment.
Conjunctivitis can be classified according to the cause that originates it, among the most important the following can be mentioned:
- Bacterial: various bacteria can be responsible for the origin of this infection. In this case, the symptoms of the red eye are generally associated with tearing of a greenish hue or, failing that, yellow.
- Viral: these are usually the most frequent of all, generally caused by adenovirus, with less legañas and possible painful corneal involvement. They are highly contagious and usually remit spontaneously, however, topical symptomatic treatment and constant washing are usually prescribed.
- The Allergic: generally seasonal, they differ from others by the fact of having a significant itching, and by having watery legañas, this is frequently associated with sinusitis.
Conjunctivitis due to a foreign body, misuse of contact lenses or lenses, or failing that if they are not properly disinfected, easily allows the introduction of microbes, giving way to conjunctivitis.
Finally, there are the Traumatic. When there are direct injuries to the eye, such as scratches and blows, since they facilitate conjunctival over-infection.
In general, this infection is benign, since it usually resolves after a few days with treatment based on eye cleaning and the use of eye drops that refresh the affected area, ophthalmic drops composed of antibiotics or antiallergics, depending on the origin of it.
