A Disk Defragmenter is a program that restores order on the surface of the hard disk or hard disk of computers, thus solving the problem of fragmentation and achieving optimal performance in them.

During the process of copying a file, the computer's operating system (generally Windows) shreds the information and distributes it among the smallest units of space into which the disk is divided, known as clusters .

The problem is that the system copies the data sequentially in the first cluster it finds available, so the content of the file is scattered on the surface of the disk. This process is called fragmentation.

The disk defragmenter to take care of this problem, copies the sparse fragments of a file into memory and then finds a free place for them to group them.

If the data on the disk is fragmented, the read head of a hard disk or floppy disk drive must travel much of the disk's surface to complete reading a file. In this way, the work is excessively slow. Information is scattered, and the system spends a lot of time looking for all the fragments that make it up.

On a properly fragmented drive, on the other hand, the system can speed up the data in a file, since it is arranged contiguously, and also frees up some disk space, which is why it is convenient to use the defragmenter.

The use that is given to the PC has a significant influence on the ideal frequency with which the disk drives should be defragmented. If you frequently uninstall and install applications, it should be done at least once a month. If files are deleted, copied or moved on disk, they will also need to be optimized often. However, the same disk defragmenter when it does an analysis, tells us if it is necessary or not.

The defragmenter screen shows the details of file operations, so that the user can graphically check the status of the hard disk defragmentation.

Optimized data (clusters that have been copied to a new location), written data (clusters that are being written to disk), damaged clusters (clusters that are not recoverable and cannot be accessed) are observed; immovable data (for security reasons, some files cannot be moved); and the space without defragmenting (these clusters have not been copied to a new placement).
