The inhabitants of ancient Greece settled on the shores of the Aegean Sea, the Balkan Peninsula and the Anatolian Peninsula. They had the most advanced economy in the world at that time; Among its citizens, great alchemists, poets and scientists stood out, laying the foundations for the development of modern science. Today, they are also remembered for the rich culture they possessed; especially its religious aspect, very devout and complete, which, like many doctrines, sought to give meaning to life, explain natural phenomena and establish a series of unbreakable divine laws.
Greek mythology is, perhaps, one of the most important treasures left by the now-defunct civilization. It contains the history and experiences of almost all the heroes and Gods who had a prominent role in the creation of the world or confrontations with other important figures. Among these characters, Dionysus stands out, the God of wine, the party, the celebration and the rites of ecstasy; its name comes from the ancient Greek “Διώνυσος”, which means “the son of Zeus”. Its Roman equivalent was known as Bacchus - coming from “Βάκχος” -, the name from which the term “bakcheia” would originate, used to refer to the frenzy it could induce.
It is not known exactly who his parents were; however, in all versions Zeus is kept as his father, while his mother can be Persephone or Semele. His body description is vague in terms of sexual gender, since he is described as a mixture between the masculine and the feminine; for this reason, it is quite common to find representations where he is shown as an androgynous youth. The rites that were celebrated in his honor were among the best known within the mystery religions, those retinues of adoration in which a dynamic that involved the senses and the physical entity was proposed. Based on this concept, certain celebrations were held, called bacchanalia, in which orgies, feasts and organization of future political and military movements (conspiracies) were held; However, the Senate, when threatened by the plans that were being developed there, decided to prohibit them.
