The term dyspnea is used in the field of medicine to describe a respiratory difficulty that is usually expressed by shortness of breath. This condition is caused by a subjective feeling of discomfort, which usually occurs in poor breathing, which includes different qualitative sensations with an intensity that can vary. This experience presents thanks to the interactions in which multiple physiological, social, psychological and environmental factors intervene that at the same timethey can induce, from physiological responses to secondary behaviors. Some of the symptoms that arise from dyspnea are decreased oxygen levels, dizziness, nausea and anxiety. Besides all, this can occur in the person both in a state of rest and physical effort.
Something very common is that just after having made a relatively high physical effort for a person, breathing becomes altered and a feeling of lack of air appears. Those individuals who consume large amounts of cigarettes and people with cardiovascular and / or pulmonary diseases are usually the most likely to suffer from dyspnea, a shortness of breath and breathing problems with only small efforts.
This shortness of breath can occur for different reasons. It is for this reason that external elements such as the lack of oxygen that occurs due to high exposure to toxic gases, as well as the entry of a foreign body into the respiratory tract can be causative elements. In the same way, there are psychological factors such as hyperventilation syndrome, which usually causes difficulties with breathing.
In order for an expert to be able to determine the causes and establish the diagnosis of dyspnea, it is necessary that they first proceed to take a complete anamnesis. This is based on the realization of simple questions that allow to determine the diagnosis, in general the patient is asked when the symptoms began, if the onset of dyspnea was sudden or was occurring as the minutes passed in what situation the problems appear respiratory symptoms, that is, if they occurred during physical exertion or at rest, if there are associated symptoms such as cough or chest pain, if the individual smokes and if this is the case since when and how many cigarettes a day they consume, if they are taking medication among other.
