It is a series of tools for the Mac OS, GNU, Linux and Windows system, developed by the American company DivX inc., Whose main function is to decode and encode a digital signal. It is based on the standards specified in the MPEG-4 method, on the digital compression of videos and music files, introduced in 1998. Sometimes it is referred to as a “codec”; However, it is generally called according to the name of the company that developed it, the aforementioned DivX inc., located in San Diego, California, founded in 1999 and which focuses on the digital treatment of videos, completely online, in addition to certifying the devices that are for the reproduction and recording of videos.
Initially, DivX was developed for the live transmission of digital television; however, with the advent of the internet age, it became much more popular; furthermore, the data on the CD-ROM, the new material on which the movies were stored, was recorded with the DivX. It is estimated that 240 million were downloaded in 2003, as it is an open source program, in addition to providing a quality superior to that of VHS, with 1 Mbit per second. However, the operating systems for which the developer worked were new compressors-decompressors, with files of less weight and much more capacity.
Around 2006, DivX Inc., began to finance a page, similar to that of YouTube, where any registered user could upload content or broadcast live. The most peculiar characteristic of this one was that the videos were compressed in DivX, which added a high quality to them. Despite its advantages, in 2008 it was disqualified, due to the end of the sponsorship by the company.
