What is speciesism? »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

It is the ethical and moral discrimination that is carried out against certain individuals based on their belonging or not to specific species. Although the use of this word is not widespread, it is always related to two great ideas. The term speciesism comes from the word "species", and indicates the human attitude according to which the species itself (human, in this case) is privileged for some reason over all other animal species.

First, with the so-called human speciesism, which implies that each non-human species is powerless when it comes to the protection of their rights.

It can be said that this position is derived from anthropocentric thinking, according to which life and the universe revolve around the human being. Furthermore, it could be said that speciesism is primarily a prejudice towards non-human animals and discrimination results from that prejudice. Be that as it may, it is clear that speciesism considers the rights of humans to be more important than the rights of other animals, without having any objective reason to base this belief, simply because they are of different species.

On the other hand, it is maintained that the possession of "exclusively human" qualities, such as a certain degree or type of intelligence, certain linguistic capacities, etc., makes humans, and only humans, deserve fair and equitable treatment. But not all humans possess such qualities. Following this premise, newborns, humans with a profound mental disability or patients with advanced Alzheimer's do not deserve to be respected like the rest. This discrimination is clearly unfair, since the qualities chosen do not determine what our interests are and whether our lives should be respected or not.

Species were found in cultures across the galaxy, and for various reasons, from religion and race to an inflated sense of superiority. It ranged from single individuals to entire species. Some races, such as the Gran and the Givin, were slightly species-like and could work with other races.

Others, like the Hutts and the Chiss, were considered inherently superior, but could sometimes work with other races. Other races, such as the Ssi-ruuk, Yevetha, and Yuuzhan Vong, regarded all other races as abominations. An especially prevalent type of species was humanocentrism. Some believed that the Zabraks were speciesists due to their extreme determination and willpower, although that was not true. One notable human being was Count Dooku, who considered all non-human life forms to be unpleasant and inferior. In response to these feelings, the aliens often formed anti-human feelings.
