What is ethnicity? »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

The word ethnic comes from Greek roots, which is composed from the voice “ἔθνος” in addition to the suffix “ia” that refers to quality. The dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy describes the word ethnicity as a community or collectivity made up of human beings characterized by cultural, racial, linguistic affinities, among others. Ethnicity is the group of people or individuals who are related thanks to their idiomatic, cultural, religious traits or, on the other hand, to the fact that they share certain celebrations, festivities, music, historical ties, territory, clothing, etc. These groups constantly demand for themselves a political structuring together with the power of a territory.

Similarly, there are countries or national territories that are characterized by their multi-ethnicity, and in them it should be noted that the rights of each of their minorities are respected. On different occasions, the term ethnic group is confused with the word race, although these terms do not refer to the same thing; because ethnicity encompasses all those cultural factors such as language, religion, traditions, among others; On the other hand the race refers to the morphological connotations of a particular human group as facial features, skin color, texture etc.

There are infinities of people, and it is important to mention that each time they are increasing, who object, refute and attack the different types of ethnic groups or the simple act of establishing a classification of human beings in different ethnicities and races, relying on the belief that these communities can lead to aggressions and conflicts of great magnitude; Likewise, due to the fact of sympathizing with a social group, an individual can lead to an exasperated position of defense of his characteristic and thus enter into a dispute with the other members of other groups.
