Intensive livestock farming is one where the reces are fenced, also almost always in humid conditions, with light and artificially created temperatures, so that in this way production increases in the shortest period of time possible. This procedure or form of cattle raising is generally carried out in small areas or land, which could cover around four to thirty animals per hectare. In intensive livestock farming, cattle are fed especially with enriched foods and manipulated by man so that the development of these animals is faster and of higher quality; therefore, a large investment is needed with respect to its facilities in terms of labor, food, technology, implements, etc.
Here the control of the animals is constant, the cattle do not need to look for their food but for their part this is taken to the place where they are, providing them with a highly balanced diet in order to balance its quantity and quality to give it a better development of the production that is underway; for each bovine the average weight gain per day can range from 450 to 1500 grams per day. This system can be carried out through confinement of the animals, however there are cases in which this does not happen.
Intensive cattle ranching is usually practiced in countries like the United States, specifically in territories of the center and the west; also in Canada, Western Europe and China. At present, this system has been implemented or has been implemented in the vicinity of cities through farms that are highly industrialized, raising from pigs, birds and rabbits with the purpose of supplying these cities with this meat.
