Gay is a cultural term, typical of modern society that serves to designate those people, generally men, who maintain a sex-affective relationship with another man. It could be said that gay is synonymous with homosexuality, although the etymology and history of the term tell us a different version.
The term gay was first coined in the mid-18th century in England, to refer to men who practiced prostitution on the streets of London. The festive and joyous demeanor of these "Knights" led to this term being used in a more generic way. Already by the 60s and with all the taboos of society at that time, gay was used to call gay men with certainly mannered and joyful behavior.
As the 21st century approached and with the cessation of taboos around the subject, the term was gaining more importance in the community, very soon, the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy would define it as "Everything Relating to Homosexuality ”. Later, since it was not used to refer to lesbian, transgender and transgender women, the word gay remained exclusively to refer to gay men.
Despite the fact that gays have been legislated and tried to form part of society as heterosexual people, that is, without such distinction, there are still pejorative ways of mentioning them. Gay in many countries is one of them. The term can be used depending on the way in which it is said in a derogatory way, in a tone of derision and contempt.
