Genocide is a word created from Greek voices, according to the RAE formed by “γένος” which means “ lineage ” and the particle “cidio”; on the other hand, different sources state that its lexical composition starts from the word "genus" which refers to " lineage " or "birth" and the suffix "cida" which means "the one who kills". The entry genocide can be defined as that murder or crime perpetrated against a certain social group due to reasons of a different nature, which among them may be religious, political or ethnic reasons.
The great dictionaries expose the word as the elimination or methodical extermination of a given social group motivated by its religion, race, nationality or ethnicity.
The phrase genocide was proposed for the first time in 1944 in a book published by a Jewish-Polish jurist named Raphael Lemkin, whose book was called " The Axis Power in Occupied Europe " in order to catalog the extermination enterprise. of gypsies and Jews executed during the time of World War II by the group of Nazis. It was set up to symbolize the massacres carried out by Turkey against the Armenians in 1915 and also to mark the systematic annihilation of indigenous Amerindian populations by Europeans during the conquest. Then the slaughter of Cambodians by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s and the slaughter of the Tutsi by the Hutu in Rwanda. they are also adjudicated as genocide.
Most of the studies carried out throughout history, including the one carried out by the British historian and sociologist Michael Mann, have shown that over time the genocides carried out in different parts of the world have meant the death or massacre of about 70 million people or more.
