The term Gringo is usually used regionally in some countries of Latin America and Brazil to refer to those speakers of European languages that are considered unintelligible to Spanish-speaking people. The word has referred according to the time and regions to citizens of different western countries that do not belong to the Iberian cultural area. In general, this word is used in a derogatory sense, towards foreign people, but especially to Americans. Therefore, a person, a song or any cultural manifestation of the United States could be classified as a gringo. As commented, this is a term with negative connotations and that are based on the anti-American positions that are presented in some social contexts of the Latin American region.
It should be clarified that there is no single version regarding its origin. For some people or in some regions, the word gringo comes from the social rejection of Mexicans in the face of the presence of American troops who occupied their territory during a period of the nineteenth century, in addition to that, at that time the United States troops had a colored clothing green and if the words “green” are merged together with “go”, which means go away, the word gringo is formed, which when translated literally means “green, go”.
Another interpretation of this originates from the fact that in English Greek (Greek) is used to refer to a foreign language. In addition to this, it is also stated that in ancient times there was a director of a banana company whose last name was Green and that the employees who were in his charge confronted him using protests such as "green go".
What is clear is the fact that the word gringo emphasizes a reality: the foreign has historically been valued in a derogatory way. In this way, we can give an example to Spain, a country in which the term gabacho is used to refer to the French, while tourists are called tourists in a pejorative way. This custom is nothing new, as it must not be forgotten that the Greeks of ancient Greece used to disparagingly call all those who were not natives of Greece Metecos.
