It is known as a hematoma to the accumulation of blood that is located in tissues such as muscle tissue. This element is formed at the moment when blood leaves one or more blood vessels into the surrounding tissue. When these appear in the areas adjacent to the surface of the skin, a red spot characteristic of these situations can be observed after a short time, which is known as a bruise.
It should be noted that on some occasions it may take several days for the hematoma to be seen on the surface of the skin. Bruising is a normal reaction of the body to injury or contusions, causing damage to the blood vessels
Depending on the level and intensity of the injury that generates it, there are different types of hematomas, and they develop as follows:
- Pain: this is the first symptom that occurs in the hematoma, it can be perceived in the area where it appears.
- Inflammation: in the place where the injury occurred, an inflammation will occur that will decrease naturally as the days go by.
- Change in skin color: another symptom is the variation of color as the hours and days go by. Initially a pinkish color will appear, later it will change to a bluish color, with the passage of days it will change to yellow-greenish and finally as the skin heals it will return to normal color.
Hematomas can occur for quite a variety of reasons. But generally they are due to damage to blood vessels, which happens as a result of injuries to the body, such as those caused by a traffic accident or direct bruises and blows. If damage occurs to one or more vessels, blood will move into tissue around the vessel or into body cavities. It is for this reason that bruises can occur under the skin or also in organs.
In addition, it should be noted that there are coagulant medications such as acetylsalicylic acid or Phenprocoumon, which can increase the risk of bruising.
