It is a mobile, odd and symmetrical bone that is found in the anterior part of the neck, under the tongue and has a capital U shape, convex in front and concave behind, it is one of the double bones that makes up the facial structure, it is Linked to the thyroid cartilage through the muscles and is suspended from the temporal bones process by the ligaments. This muscle has its movement forward, backward, down, to the sides and on itself for a total of seventeen muscles.
Four muscles allow it to move forward which are the two of the mylo hyoid and the two of the hyoid genius, of the muscles that allow it to move it backwards are the long hyoid and the hyoid style. The muscles that allow you to move down are two the external hyoid and the hyoid cost. The hyoid bone is carried to the sides through two digastric muscles, which receive that name because it has two fleshy parts, one for each side, and of the muscles that allow its movement with each other there is the so-called transversal and its use is to collect or bend the small branches over itself and lift the base of the tongue.
The hyoid bone is the only bone that does not articulate with another bone, it serves to protect the pharynx and larynx and is used to make attachments to different muscles of the jaw and face. Sometimes it can be attached to the rest of the skeleton by various bone formations, thus constituting the hyoid apparatus.
