The term Hispanic comes from the Latin hispanus and is often used as a synonym for Spanish. The word Hispanic has its origin in the word Hispania, which was the one used by both the Phoenicians and the Romans to name the Iberian Peninsula at first.
Hispanic seeks to refer to people from Spain or any other Spanish-speaking country, it can be from America, Asia or Africa. Likewise, the idea of Hispanic is linked to the mother tongue, that is, Spanish.
In North America the term Hispanic is used to name anyone who speaks the Spanish language or who has a family of Hispanic American origin. A Venezuelan of Italian origin, a Peruvian of indigenous origin or an Ecuadorian of African origin are classified as Hispanic.
In the Latin American region, in contrast to the United States, there was a strong Spanish immigration of the 19th and 20th centuries, which makes this use of the word Hispanic not very meaningful. Normally, it is spoken instead of Creoles that are Latin Americans with Spanish origin or Spaniards born in the American territory, mestizos are being descendants of Spaniards and indigenous or mulattos who are descendants of Spaniards and Africans.
It is worth noting that based on this term that is being addressed, today we are talking about illustrious Hispanics of great value in international history. Reference can be made, for example, to Trajan, who is considered the first Hispanic to become Emperor of Rome because he was born in Italica, which currently corresponds to Seville.
