Ibero-America is the word used to describe that set of countries that were colonies of Spain and Portugal, this is because Spain and Portugal are the ones that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Therefore, in a general way, Ibero-America is a term that governs the American nations that achieved their independence from Spain and Portugal, therefore each of the people born or naturalized in these territories is classified as Ibero-American.
The Ibero-American territory covers around 18 million square kilometers, ranging from Mexico to Argentina, not counting those countries that were not colonies of Portugal or Spain; In other words, territories such as the United States, which was a colony of England, do not belong to Latin America, or other territories such as Canada, Alaska, Greenland, French and Dutch Antilles, Haiti, among others.
Since the Ibero-American territory is those that were colonies of Spain and Portugal, the languages that stand out are Spanish and Portuguese; But there are also a large number of languages, which are non-Indo-European languages, some of which are recognized and others not officially; Among them are: Guaraní, Mapudungun, Aymara, Mayan languages, Quechua, Yucatecan Maya, Náhuatl, Rapanui.
The Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Doubts also known by its acronym DPD, which is a document created by the Royal Spanish Academy with the purpose of clarifying certain doubts regarding the uses of the Spanish language, defines Ibero-America as “a region made up of the American nations that belonged as colonies to the old Spanish and Portuguese Iberian empires ”.
Every year, since 1990, the so-called Ibero-American Summit is held, where the heads of state of the 22 countries that make up the Organization of Ibero-American States meet, with the purpose of discussing situations of different kinds.
The countries that make up Ibero-America are: Ecuador, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay.
