Independence is a condition of an individual or of a group of organs that do not have dependence on an agent other than themselves. This quality is typical of individuals who have the conditions to defend themselves and develop without the need to have someone or something that drives them or keeps them firm in their ideas.
The idea that we have of independence comes from revolutionary processes that have taken place in history, in which countries overwhelmed and dominated by dictatorial and colonizing regimes decide to raise up their nationalist and creole forces to combat oppression. Countries such as those of America, fought for more than a century to achieve their independence from the European forces that colonized them since their arrival in their lands. Of course the Europeans to see that the peoples tried to maintain their yoke, so when we talk about battles and wars to liberate a country we are talking about an independence process that arose from ideas of ending oppressive colonies.
The determining characteristics of an independence are basically freedom, the power to decide and the staging of actions that do not depend on an order established by someone or something else. Independence becomes a feeling when there is a desire for the person to liberate themselves, as time passes and as the colonized countries freed themselves, actions such as slavery, which was the strongest deprivation of independence that existed at that time, ceased until becoming the right to be independent in the tasks that were taken.
At present there is talk of a " Symbolic or Virtual " independence given the cooperation between countries to help with financial or cultural problems that they have. The concept of independence has evolved, becoming from a necessity as it was before to a right of the human being and of anyone or anything that wishes to be free.
