The term lexicography comes from Greek roots, composed of "lexikos" that refers to the relativity of the word, plus the suffix "ia" that refers to quality; However, other sources state that specifically this word comes from the word lexikográphos, because it was created from the art made by a lexicographer, formed by “λεξικόν” or “lexikós” and “grafos ”or“ γραφος ”, which means“ to write ”. Lexicography is exposed as a reference of a technique or activity that is based on the composition or elaboration of dictionaries or lexicons; that is, this is also described as the discipline of collecting words that must be immersed in a lexicon.
In the linguistic field, the lexicography is specified as a science that is in charge of the study and investigation of the signs and how these can get to form possible words; This branch of linguistics proposes to implement the applicable methods for the writing and creation of dictionaries of any kind.
This ancient discipline intends to inquire about a systematic collection and explanation of each of the words, also exposed as lexical units, of a certain language, but almost always in breadth rather than depth, a fact that allows its discipline to be a member of the lexicology. what these so-called lexical units comprise are not only individual words but also those compound words, idioms up to dependent morphemes, which are those that adhere to another morpheme in order to give a meaning to the word.
Lexicography as a discipline is not only limited to gathering words for the creation of dictionaries; In other words, it also includes a series of theoretical analyzes, this is what is known as metalexicography or theoretical lexicography, it goes beyond the origins of the production of dictionaries, typology, aspects related to its formal structure, compilation methods, among others.
