The "honeymoon" is a phrase that describes the post-marriage phase. It is the second step, and sometimes the most anticipated, after the ceremony, crowned with a romantic trip to a chosen destination to spend a few relaxing days. After the wedding celebration, the newly married couple prepares to enjoy a dream trip that is often marked by a very special destination.
The origin of this expression dates back to the 16th century, meaning the first month (and therefore the first moon) after the wedding. It is also said that during this period it was common for the couple to drink mead, a drink that supposedly increased fertility. Therefore, the first month after the wedding was known as a honeymoon.
Four millennia ago, ancient Babylon and the Roman Empire used this term to address newlyweds. In Babylon, the father of the bride gave the groom a honey beer to consume for the first month. In Egypt, the pharaohs were the ones who consumed honey during the 28 days after the wedding to achieve full marital happiness.
On the other hand, in Ancient Rome, the mother was the one who left honey every night during the first month in the bride and groom's room, which served a double function: as food and women used it to soften the skin.
The concept of honeymoon shows through the metaphor the emotional sweetness that love produces in a stage of life that is magical. And it is that newly married couples have many illusions about the future for this life project in common, but especially, they have a lot of present happiness: they feel lucky for everything they are living now.
Being a trip motivated by such a special purpose, couples carefully organize all the details of a romantic getaway that will complete the memories of the wedding album with personal images.
Although the couple can make trips throughout their lives with other members of the family or with other friends, the nature of this trip is the intimacy of being alone and enjoying the calm away from the rhythm that marks the daily routine marked by professional commitments that are completely parked during this trip.
