Lustro is a term that comes from the Latin “Lustrum” which means “Clean”, however the origin is more interesting than its simple etymology. In ancient Rome, a Lustro was a ritual, a traditional cult that consisted of a cleansing, a healing of the body through rites that were performed in nearby rivers. This ritual was performed every 5 years.
After five years, all members of the community had to attend, especially the Pater Familia (Parents of Family) since if they did not attend they were punished with fines, and could even be relieved of their positions, duties and responsibilities as representatives of a family group until the next five years. In this ritual considered as an expiatory ritual, people were washed with the pure springs, something equivalent to the purification of the soul that we know today. Let us remember that the different civilizations that inhabited the world were believers in various stories and myths in which their prayers and others led the person along the sacred path of what was stipulated by that religion.
The ancient Romans worshiped a kind of "adapted version" of the Greek gods to their customs. In fact they even changed their names and the way they were worshiped. The lustrums were a symbolic way of showing that the Romans were committed to keeping their faith and devotion renewed, cleansing in pure waters the sins and evil deeds that they should have committed in the past.
Today the term five years is used in two ways, the first to indicate the five-year period that occurs after waiting for 5 years. A five-year period is then a period of time of 5 years, they usually use it as a histrionic measure of time. Also lustrum is called what is shiny, based again on the etymology, the luster when meaning clean neat, they use it to denote that which has no dirt. "Glossing" is polishing, consistently rubbing a surface (we generally talk about metals such as copper, bronze and silver until it gets a shine. There are chemicals and cleaning products that allow an easier shine when used on the surface of what is going to be polished.
