A disc-shaped membrane is described as a thin layer with a circular or disc-shaped shape, for that reason the surname “discoidal” . This type of membrane can be found in different anatomical sites.
If we speak at the cellular level, the cells that make up the human body are eukaryotic cells, these are characterized by having the nuclear material or nucleus enclosed in an internal membrane called the nuclear membrane as well as having a more organized structure with organelles within their cytoplasm. which will fulfill different and important functions for the cell, some of these organelles are composed or have discoidal membranes in an integrated way, such as, for example, the golgi apparatus this is an organelle whose function is the packaging of all cellular products, either metabolites or waste this is composed of discoidal membranes superimposed in a decreasing way.
Another cellular structure that has discoidal membranes inside it is the mitochondria, said organelle is responsible for cellular respiration, that is, transforming oxygen into energy molecules, that is, ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate), the mitochondria is very different from other organelles it is made up of two membranes, an outer membrane which has a lipid bilayer and has many pores allowing the passage of macromolecules (with large size), on the other hand it has an inner membrane which is thinner with decreased porosity and more selective which gives rise to the formationof ridges, said ridges are those that are composed of discoidal membranes, and so on, there are many structures that have membranes or layers arranged in a discoidal conformation inside them.
