From the moment that philosophy begins to inquire about its own bases, it will be applying metaphilosophy, that is, the philosophy of philosophy. This discipline is responsible for meditating about the essence of philosophy itself, counteracting the most elementary problems of philosophy. But as different philosophers conceive differently, philosophy; then there will be multiple philosophical explanations of philosophy.
In this sense, it can be said that, for example, for the famous Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, the purpose of philosophy is to refine language; while for the German philosopher Rudolf Carnap philosophy represents the analysis of scientific statements and the work of science. The problem that these interpretations generate is that they describe philosophy starting from one of its fields and denying that the other specialties are philosophy. Which leads to the fact that, by modifying the notion of philosophy, it is not possible to define the amount of knowledge that philosophy encompasses, which was supposedly its main objective, but that group is transformed by synthesizing it in its field.
The hypothesis of metaphilosophy focuses on the study of the nature of philosophy, specifically its methods, objectives, and basic theories. Within the philosophical investigations of the first hierarchy are specialties such as ontology, epistemology, the theory of values and ethics. This represents what makes up the primordial activity of philosophers, both in the past and in the present. The philosophical investigation of the primordial philosophical studies promotes a philosophical search also, but of supreme hierarchy.
Metaphilosophy presents different types, among which are the meta epistemology, which does not directly seek the essence of knowledge, but rather tries to inquire about the conditions under which there is the possibility that some of these hypotheses are really epistemological and the conditions under which these kinds of theories turn out to be true or significant. The other two kinds of metaphilosophy are meta-ontology and meta-ethics.
