What is mythology? »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

The term mythology encompasses everything that is related to myths that are generally interconnected by some common element, that is, stories that generally identify a specific culture or even some religious belief. For their part, myths are those stories of a particular culture, that have a religious character and that with the passage of time were modified, to the point of being considered as characteristic expressions of a time in history or a specific culture. Regarding the etymology of the word, it derives from the Latin language "mythologĭa" and this in turn from the Greek word "μυθολογία".

Many of the stories encompassed in mythology are generally legacies that have been passed down from generation to generation, from times when these stories were still told orally, generally the main theme of these stories is always to try to find the origin of life and the world, as well as of various natural events and even the origin of sacred characters, that is to say that mythology seeks to answer all those phenomena that do not have an explanation and if they do have not yet been proven altogether.

Mythology is frequently related to those ancient civilizations and their religious beliefs, the best known example of this is the well-known Greek mythology, which would end up being adopted by the Roman Empire, which only made some modifications to it, for that way adapt it to their culture, however after the emergence of Christianity and its progressive rise, mythology would end up being relegated, to the point that it was considered as something pagan. Another mythology of great historical importance was the Scandinavian one, which, like Greek mythology, takes the religious beliefs of those regions.

A pesar de que el auge de la mitología en la sociedad se cree que tuvo mayor alcance en las civilizaciones como la griega, romana etc. Es posible que en la actualidad aún pueden encontrarse vestigios de ésta en la sociedad actual, un ejemplo claro de ello, es que algunos de los nombres de los meses y días que se incluyen en el calendario derivan de nombres de dioses de la mitología.
