The oculist or ophthalmologist (as it is generally known), is that specialist in charge of treating diseases related to the eye. They have the responsibility of making diagnoses, applying treatments and dictating preventive measures for diseases related to the eyes. The medical specialty developed by the eye doctor is called ophthalmology.
Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that is responsible for analyzing eye diseases and eye surgery. The eyes frequently suffer from various disorders, which must be treated by eye doctors, some of them are:
- Myopia: this is one of the most frequent diseases, it consists of the inability of the eye to detect objects that are far away, since they are seen in a blurred and poorly defined way.
- Cataracts: this pathology consists of the cloudiness of the lens, this can be partial or total. This clouding causes light to scatter inside the eye and cannot focus on the retina, producing blurry images.
- Muscle degeneration: this is a vision disorder, which gradually ends with central and acute vision, making the person unable to read easily. This disease is very common in people over the age of sixty.
Each and every one of these diseases is treated by the eye doctor. It is recommended that if any person has any type of difficulty that prevents them from seeing the objects clearly, they go to an eye doctor who will evaluate them and give them the corresponding diagnosis. Most of these pathologies require the supply of certain medicines, while others require a surgical intervention or in the least cases, the adaptation of corrective lenses that help improve vision and thus avoid the development of the disease.
The oculist before assigning glasses to patients, must first perform an analysis on the eyes, through optical devices, which help him determine the degree of magnification that the patient's lenses should have.
In surgical matters, one of the methods that is being used the most is refractive surgery, which consists of a series of surgical procedures that change the anatomy of the eye, specifically the cornea, thus eliminating all refractive defects, such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
