Oppression is an inner feeling or discomfort that an individual experiences but if the sensation is physical, it can be defined as a suffocation in the chest, causing difficulty in breathing and in some cases pain.
This discomfort can also be used to refer to a spiritual or mental sense. This happens when the person has a distressing problem or situation and this discomfort creates a feeling of regret. Likewise, oppression is typical of situations of great tension or emotional stress caused by adverse personal circumstances, for example a work problem, family or love disappointment.
There is another type of oppression, such as politics, which refers to collective phenomena within the political arena. This occurs when a people of a country or a territory is subjected by a tyrannical regime. Regarding this, the regime acts as an oppressor and the population as a whole is the oppressed. Throughout history there have been moments where oppression has been the protagonist, especially in dictatorships or totalitarian regimes. This happens when the leaders exercise power in an absolute way subjecting the people to general frustration, not being able to relate fully and with certain levels of freedom. That is why before feeling there is usually a desire freedom, provoking a popular reaction aimed at ending political oppression.
From a political perspective, oppression implies a relationship with power. This is the action of forcing someone or imposing a series of guidelines or norms without their will. On the other hand, in democratic nations there are mechanisms of power, but they are legitimized by another power, such as the electoral one, and there is a division of powers that reduces the levels of oppression that a democratic regime could exercise over the people.
It is in dictatorial systems where oppression is carried out more frequently, with the majority of the people suffering from a despotic policy. Likewise, there is an acceptance by the citizens because there is a fear of converting to provoke oppression, since the leaders apply severe punishments or sanctions in the face of any threat.
