The word obscurantism is the extreme opposition to the expansion, dissemination and transmission of progress and knowledge of the popular classes, to a culture manifesting or emerging between social classes. It is also attributed to the act of defending unreasonable, absurd or retrograde ideals, postures or behavior; obscurantism is an ideology or doctrine that reaches its peak in the Middle Ages, which was the period between the end of the Ancient Era in the 5th century and the Renaissance in the 14th century. Obscurantism is the opposite of free thought and its opponents usually associate it with religious precepts.

During medieval times it is known as a dark age, and as a gloomy, fruitless, and unproductive period in the history of ideas, since according to several historians, the church set out to abolish and suppress all kinds of thought and ideology that did not provided him with no benefit, and the European population being deprived of questioning religious dogmas, I adopt those "revealed truths" which did not admit criticism, since by not recognizing them they would be forced to reconsider or they would be persecuted to death. Clerics monopolized knowledge and work should not have profit but mere survival. Throughout this period there was a great demographic decrease due to all the ecclesiastical obscurantism, this stage was also of little progress and with few discoveries, for what corresponds to a period of 1000 years in which much more knowledge could have been developed if the philosophy would not have been a slave to faith. In conclusion, it was a period of hunger, fear and repression.
